125 Years Director Spotlight
Alan Mummery
Walk into Lambert & Foster on any given day, and chances are you’ll spot Alan, quietly getting things done, sharing a laugh with a colleague, or catching up with a long-time client who’s more like an old friend.
Alan first joined L&F in July 1986, fresh out of College. A born-and-bred Kent local, he knew he didn’t want to stray far from the family farm in Canterbury, so when a role at Lambert & Foster came up, he grabbed the opportunity and has never looked back.
Armed with a degree in Estate Management from the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester, Alan arrived ready to learn. But what began as a job quickly became something more, a career, a calling, and a second family.
What’s kept him here all these years? For Alan, it’s simple:

It’s the integrity of the company, he says, that sets it apart. The history. The values. The people. It’s a culture where doing the right thing isn’t just encouraged, it’s expected. That strong foundation doesn’t just attract great people, it keeps them. And Alan is living proof.
Now the longest-serving member of the team, Alan has built a career on trust, relationships, and genuine care for the clients he serves, many of whom he’s worked with for decades. In the rural world, where loyalty and reputation carry real weight, Alan’s steady presence has been a constant for generations of the same family.
His knowledge runs deep. His commitment runs even deeper. And while Alan would never say it himself, Lambert & Foster wouldn’t be quite the same without him.
At L&F, people tend to stick around, with low staff turnover, the senior team has time and headspace to mentor rising stars, nurturing young talent and handing over the reins when the time is right.
Alan’s seen it all. He’s worked with clients across multiple generations, grandparents, parents and now their children. And while the agricultural world has had its fair share of challenges, he’s confident more generations will follow, alongside new families stepping into farming and land ownership.
One of the firm’s secret weapons? Bloomfields, the specialist planning consultancy that’s part of the L&F family. According to Alan, it’s been a game-changer.
Alan originally joined the firm to become an auctioneer but after Foot and Mouth in 2001 the world changed as did Lambert & Foster who reshaped to create new opportunities beyond its traditional offering. And while livestock auctions are now part of the firm’s history, Alan still is contacted by clients from those days.
Looking ahead? Alan’s feeling confident. With talented young people coming through the ranks, teams that genuinely enjoy working together, and a business that’s always moving forward, the future is bright.
